My Musings
With the aphid attack on my GreenStalk Planter, the craziness around filing this year’s tax returns, and my youngest son performing in his school’s production of Mama Mia!, it has been a crazy few weeks around the Sorber household. The aphid invasion was solved (mostly) by unleashing a legion of lady bugs, though I’ll need to be more vigilant in my pest control in the future. Taxes are now done, minus a few things I need to put in place moving forward. My son’s show went well and was probably one of the most enjoyable high school productions I’ve ever seen.
I’m on vacation from my day job for the next week, so I’m hoping to take some time to relax, work on some writing projects, and catch up on some neglected chores. I’ve yet to see Batman and Fantastic Beasts Part III is out now, so I may go see a movie or two as well.
What I’m Watching/Reading Update
- I recently finished listening to Fallout, the latest book in Craig Alanson’s Expeditionary Force series. There are only a few books left to come in the series, so finishing each one is bittersweet.
- I’m reading J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert’s Backyard Starship, and hope to finish it in the coming week. I’m really enjoying it so far.
My son, wife and I have been on an anime kick and its pretty much all we’ve been watching lately. Here’s a rundown:
- We powered through Black Clover, thinking it was a complete series. After we finished season four, we realized there was more to come. That was really cool except now we have to wait! I enjoyed this series a lot…the Black Bulls are really awesome!
- After Black Clover we watched Jujutsu Kaisen. There were only two seasons so far. The animation is excellent. There some really great moments, especially in season 2. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but my son says that is really good.
- After Jujutsu Kaisen, we watched Demon Slayer. This one took a little while to get going (in my opinion) but really hit its stride in the Mugen Train and Entertainment District Arcs. I’m definitely looking forward to more!
- Rather than starting something new, we decided to go back and start a rewatch of My Hero Academia. We should finish season 1 today. We’re big fans of the show and can’t wait for new episodes to come out.
What are you watching or reading lately? I’d love to hear from you!
Mechhaven Missives
- I’ve received my editor’s feedback for On Darkhaven Forged. He returned it to me sooner than expected, so I’m already 25% through reviewing his suggestions. On Darkhaven Forged is well on it’s way to its June 1st release!
- My goal is to start Mechhaven Book 4 on April 17th. It will probably take me through the middle of August to complete the first draft. Book 4 will most likely be released in December.
- I have started a short story set in the Mechhaven universe that I’ll be submitting to an anthology. Wish me luck that it is selected!
- There were quite a few downloads of Unexpected Contact during the last two weeks and since we’ve had a number of new subscribers in that time, I’m going to keep the direct download links live for another two weeks. So if you missed out, or are just joining us, take a look below.

Doc Roberts and the Mindharp of Tombaku
By Jay Toney
With great power, comes greed, corruption, and domination.
“Don’t let that son of a space station whore escape to hyperspace,” Doc says to the AI.
Natasha says, “Fifteen seconds to weapons range.” She adds the schematic of the Luck Gone Wrong to its image on the viewscreen. It shows the locations of the freighter’s different subsystems. A targeting reticle is added to the forward view. She centers it on the fleeing spaceship, then uses the controls on the weapon console to fine tune the aim, so it is focused on the jump capacitors. She presses and holds the firing stud for two seconds.
The main guns fire. Twin beams of energy burn through the freighter’s energy shields. The jump capacitors burn with blue-white light and energy arcs across the propulsion rig. The engines die down. Doc orders the AI, “Pull alongside the Luck Gone Wrong. We are bringing it aboard.”
Natasha powers down the main guns. She stands, and walks a few meters to the helm controls, then she sits behind them. She fires a short burst of the aft thrusters, and two quick bursts of the portside thrusters, then she says, “We will be in position in three and a half minutes.”
